Triathlons are among the most demanding and exhilarating of all endurance sports, challenging athletes to excel in swimming, cycling, and running. For Matthew, his journey into the world of triathlons was anything but conventional, but it’s a path that has led to remarkable success. In this article, we’ll explore Matthew’s inspiring journey, challenges, and partnership with Bizcash as his new sponsor to further his development in the sport.
The Unconventional Start
“I did not take the usual path into triathlon. I got into it a lot later in life than most. It all started in early 2020 after purchasing a road bike to complete several local cycle races. I had heard about triathlon through my partner. Her father had competed in a few over the years, and it sounded interesting. I figured I had a bicycle I could give one a bash. I signed up for a local sprint distance race and ended up winning. The rest was history…”
Matthew’s journey began with a simple road bike purchase and a curiosity about triathlons. Little did he know that this decision would mark the beginning of a remarkable adventure.
Overcoming Challenges
Matthew’s early days as a triathlete were marked by unique challenges, primarily the COVID-19 pandemic. As someone who had never swum competitively, the closure of gyms and swimming pools presented a significant obstacle. However, he adapted, focusing initially on cycling and running while patiently waiting for the opportunity to incorporate swimming into his training.
Injuries also posed a hurdle, as he quickly learned that a “full gas” approach to training wasn’t always the wisest choice. Structure and balance became key components of his regimen, with guidance from a local triathlon team helping him refine his training plan.
Mastering Three Disciplines
Unlike many triathletes transitioning from single-sport backgrounds, Matthew started swimming, cycling, and running from scratch. This unique approach required him to develop proficiency in all three disciplines simultaneously. He gradually found a balance, prioritising each discipline based on circumstances and needs, and joined a local triathlon team to streamline his workouts.
The Mental Game
Triathlons demand as much mental fortitude as physical fitness, if not more. Matthew emphasises the importance of mental preparation in his training. He believes mental readiness is closely linked to training experiences, emphasising that “you cannot do in a race what you have not done in training.” Visualisation, staying calm, and rational thinking during challenging moments are all part of his mental training.
Proudest Moments
Matthew humbly acknowledges that it’s not about a specific race or victory when asked about his proudest moment as a triathlete. Instead, his proudest achievement is his unwavering commitment to his journey. Despite doubts and obstacles, he never gave up on himself and pursued his dream of racing as a professional triathlete.
Upcoming Races
As a sponsored athlete, Matthew has transitioned to racing as an elite/professional triathlete. His upcoming race schedule for the next few months includes Ironman 70.3 Belgium, Challenge Viex-Bocau, and Ironman 70.3 Mossel Bay. Each race presents an opportunity to gain valuable experience and points in the professional ranking system.
Targeting Excellence
Matthew’s focus sort term is on middle-distance triathlons (70.3), and he is determined to give his absolute best in each race. He emphasises that the goal is always to perform at the highest level and achieve the best possible results. The transition to the professional ranks will introduce him to new challenges, race dynamics, and tactics, which he plans to master through these initial races.
Training Regimen
Training for triathlons is a demanding and time-consuming endeavour, and Matthew’s daily routine reflects this commitment. He trains with a group of like-minded athletes in Port Elizabeth/Gqeberha, where he also works closely with his coach. His training includes three daily sessions, comprising discipline-specific workouts and gym sessions. Training duration can range from 2 to 6 hours per day, with the rest of his time dedicated to recovery and preparation for the next session.
Long-Term Vision
Matthew’s long-term vision as a triathlete is to push his limits and go as far as possible in the sport. He aims to climb the ranks, participate in high-profile races, and continue representing himself and his sponsors with pride. Beyond personal success, he hopes to inspire others to chase their dreams, regardless of their circumstances, and prove that with determination, anything is possible.
Matthew’s journey into triathlons is a testament to the power of determination and passion. With Bizcash as his new sponsor, he is poised to achieve new heights in the world of triathlons, and his story serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes everywhere. We look forward to following his continued success and growth as a professional triathlete.
